Black River Gorges

Mauritius's wild heart — ancient rainforest, dramatic gorges, and rare endemic wildlife

Mauritius's Last Wilderness

Covering over 6,500 hectares in the south-west of Mauritius, Black River Gorges National Park is the island's largest protected area and its most dramatic natural landscape. Ancient rainforest cloaks steep volcanic ridges, while rivers carve deep gorges through the rock on their way to the sea.

The park is a sanctuary for some of Mauritius's rarest endemic species — including the Mauritius kestrel, pink pigeon, and echo parakeet, all brought back from the brink of extinction through dedicated conservation programmes. For nature lovers, birdwatchers, and hikers, this is the unmissable heart of wild Mauritius.
